With credit to Luis-san, today I lit up my first Trinidad Coloniales. On a full stomach after eating a fatty cheese fondue. Perfect smoking condition.
Five minutes into the cigar I got really confused. Something with Habanos SA's brand pyramid is wrong. Habanos SA lists he Trinidad brand in the top of their brand hierarchy. Then I knew what is confusing me: I reached for a Guantanamera Compay, machine-made, short filler, a brand at the very bottom of the brand pyramid. Same basic flavor profile.
To avoid any misunderstandings, I am not taking about taste and personal preferences. It's just about the basic flavor profile.
Granted, with the Trinidad every flavor is a little bit more sophisticated, a tad more rounded, less harsh, but the flavor profile is surprisingly similar to the Guantanamera.
The Trinidad, and I take the word from the maker, is pure Vuelta Abajo tobacco. The Guantanamera on the other hand is made with tobacco from the lower ranked Remedios region.
I go out on the edge here, but this would indicate that the Remedios region is picking up on the way more famous Abajo. Or Abajo is loosing it.
Either way, on the brand pyramid the two cigars should be worlds apart.
